Job Description

Our client, a Cooperative Society registered under the Cooperative Societies Act (Cap. 490), whose mandate is to pool members' resources for investment in land and housing projects, is seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced Assistant Accountant

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Accountant will support the Accountant in managing the Society's day-to-day finance and accounting functions. The role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing financial transactions, preparing financial reports, ensuring statutory compliance, and supporting budgeting and financial controls in accordance with the Society's policies and applicable regulations

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Reporting
  • Assist in the timely preparation of all financial statements for the organization and present key financial results to the Accountant and other key stakeholders.
  • Provide the necessary financial information/Accounting reports to the Accountant.
  • Preparation of periodic cash flow statements and production of appropriate reports.
  • Ensure completeness and timely submission of monthly accounts and reports to the Accountant and not later than 10th day of the following month

      2. Accounting

  • Assist in coordinating internal and external audits, financial reconciliations, and budget preparation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in respect of all the Society's financial transactions.
  • Process the Society's monthly payroll, ensure that all relevant statutory deductions are effected and forwarded to relevant authorities by the due dates, and compile annual returns and forward the same to the relevant authorities within the stipulated timelines.
  • Ensure sufficient cash in the office and the various bank accounts are adequate for daily office expenditure, and ensure all claims and payments follow the laid-down requirements and procedures before getting them approved and settled.
  • Carry out daily reconciliation of financial transactions, capture and record any issues arising, and update the Accounting system accordingly.
  • Design appropriate report formats for system use as needed, periodically update the accounting codes, and carry out daily data entry into the Accounting system
  • Troubleshoot the QuickBooks or any other appropriate accounting system and liaise with the external system support vendors
  • Processing of member statements and timely distribution so as to reach them not later than the 10th day of the following month.
  • Acknowledging all receipts and ensuring timely banking

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Commerce (Accounting Option), Accounting, Finance, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • CPA (K) or equivalent.
  • At least three (3) years relevant working experience preferably with a Cooperative Society with full organizational financial budgeting, implementation and accounting responsibility up to final accounts.

  KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCES

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Kiswahili
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and meet tight deadlines
  • Attention to detail
  • Knowledge of Computer accounting packages with particular emphasis on Excel, Word, and Navision Accounting System
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Very high integrity
